MOB Traffic partners with a geotechnical and environmental powerhouse.
Las Vegas is no stranger to success stories in the construction industry. Fueled by sustained growth in the region and a reimagined skyline every decade, there always seems to be a steady supply of new developments along the Strip and elsewhere.
Ninyo & Moore is no exception. It didn't take long for this professional geotechnical and environmental sciences consulting firm to establish deep roots in Nevada after a long-time employee decided to move here. Rather than lose the employee, the firm saw the relocation as the perfect opportunity to establish a Las Vegas presence.
"We started strong from the beginning, asking our valued clients in California to introduce our new Las Vegas team to any counterparts in Nevada," said Brian Mundo, a geologist at Ninyo & Moore. "The initial work included services for forensic projects, municipal facilities, pipelines, military facilities, and educational structures."
Today, the Las Vegas office has expanded to serve renewable energy, transportation, education, military, and local government projects. These services are supported by as many as 40 registered civil engineers, geologists, environmental specialists, field technicians, and special inspectors based in Las Vegas.
"As much as half of our work is related to geotechnical services, with the balance related to construction material testing and environmental services," said Mundo. "Most of the projects are located in Southern Nevada, but we do have a mobile testing laboratory, which allows us to provide services anywhere in the state."
One of their most recent projects included geotechnical evaluations, materials testing, and special inspections for the 190,000-square-foot Henderson Events Center for Whiting-Turner Contracting. Specifically, Ninyo & Moore was responsible for in-place density testing and observations during grading activities and asphalt placement for parking and drive areas. It also inspected foundation excavations, steel reinforcement, structural masonry, expansion anchors, welds, and structural steel. Other work included testing during concrete placement and laboratory testing of soil, concrete, grout, and mortar.
"We prepared all daily field reports, which summarized our observations, testing, and inspections," said Mundo. "This high-profile project was unique because many agencies and entities were involved. As a result, we had to keep communication lines open, plans transparent, and everyone on the same page for the common overall good for the project delivery."
With so many agencies and entities involved, MOB Traffic has been the perfect fit to provide traffic management support for the Henderson Events Center and other projects around Southern Nevada. In addition to working with Ninyo & Moore to design closure plan permits and coordinate with local and state traffic departments, MOB Traffic provided all of the barricades and signage to ensure project success.
"MOB has been a great partner for Ninyo & Moore in the Las Vegas Valley," said Mundo. "Their experienced and knowledgeable staff make our job easier as they are very familiar with the local traffic rules and regulations. They help us find the best solutions for us, our client, and the project to be completed effectively, efficiently, and expeditiously."
MOB Traffic offers something else as well. Ninyo & Moore appreciates vendors that strive for the same personal, family atmosphere that has always been a part of its culture. When most Ninyo & Moore employees are asked why they stay with the firm so long, they almost always say they enjoy working with their team members.
"When you spend most of your day at work, there needs to be a camaraderie with coworkers," says Mundo. "Our company does a great job hosting fun gatherings, raffles, potlucks, ice cream socials, and birthday parties. It's part of our culture and core belief, which lends itself to providing high-quality services and supporting our community."
Twice a year, the Ninyo & Moore Las Vegas office sponsors local charities such as Ronald McDonald House, Las Vegas Rescue Mission, Three Square, Peggy's Attic, and others. In 2022, staff donated over $1,400 in canned goods to Three Square and over $400 in toys to Peggy's Attic.
"It's important to give back to the communities in which we operate," says Mundo. "And with our Las Vegas office supporting projects from land procurement to construction, we intend to be here indefinitely, providing environmental testing and site assessments, geotechnical evaluations and design, materials testing, and construction inspections."
Mundo also said that renewable energy has become one of the firm's more significant segments in Nevada and elsewhere. The firm provides geotechnical engineering, engineering geology and geophysics, hydrogeology, soil and materials testing, special inspections, soil and groundwater contamination assessments, site remediations, hazardous building materials surveys, industrial hygiene services including mold evaluations, and occupational safety.
Founded in 1986, Ninyo & Moore has grown to include 16 offices in Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, Texas, and Utah. The firm, as a whole, has a reputation for mitigating and solving geotechnical and environmental issues, whether those challenges result from area geology, weather, or other environmental factors.
